ABOUT HYBRED PORK
Hybred Pork Inc. is a 500 sow farrowing unit and will be managed
by Dr. Tim Trayer D.V.M., Deb Trayer his wife, will assist Tim with
farrowing and record keeping. Dr. Trayer originates from Hershey,
Pa. and graduated from Ohio State University Veterinarian College
in 1979. Tim was employed until November 1 by Valley Animal
Hospital in Palmyra and worked with large and small animals. Tim
is looking forward to managing his first large hog complex.
Deb originates from Wilmington, Ohio and graduated in 1973 from
Wilmington College. Deb has worked on her father’s hog complex
and also taught Ist grade in a Columbus, Ohio school. Tim will also
be hiring some part-time workers to help over weekends and clean
up.
When the complex is populated with gilts and boars, all personnel
beyond the waiting room must leave their clothes, shower
‘ in, and wear clothes provided by Hybred Pork Inc. The clothing
supplied by Hybred will be washed and dried there and will never
leave the building. The above procedures are all part of a minimal
disease program to prevent any disease outbreak.
The breeding stock will be supplied by Dekalb Swine Breeders Inc.
of Dekalb, Illinois. Dekalb Swine Breeders will have a management
service contract with Hybred Pork Inc. in which they will supply a
serviceman to check the unit about once a month. John Beck is
Dekalb’s area salesman, Randy George and Bill Herbman are
Dekalb’s servicemen. Randy and Bill have both managed a Dekalb
1100 head sow complex for over a year before becoming servicemen.
The Dekalb gilts and boars will be moved into a gestation room
and breeding will begin in December. The gestation room consists of
Fristamat Ventilation and a narrow gutter pull plug manure system.
The gestation sows and gilts will be individually fed with an
automatic system designed by Chore-Time. The boars will be held in
the breeding pens and moved to heat check pens which have a 2W
wide pull plug gutter covered with breeding wire.
After gestation the gilts will be moved to one of four farrowing
rooms. Each room is ventilated with its own Fristamat recycling
ventilation system. Fristamat allows for a large heat savings
because of recirculating a portion of the air.
The baby pigs have an energy efficient S.B.M. brooder in the creep
area which is a radiant type heat. The farrowing crate and creep
area is on a raised woven wire deck.

The manure handlingis a Farmer Boy Ag pull plug lip system.
The lip system retains 3” of water in the front 2/3’s of the shallow pit
under the crate. The water is retained so that feed spillage or
manure can be hi pressure cleaned to the back 1/3 deeper pull plug
pit.
The baby pigs will be weaned at age 3 weeks and moved to one of
six nursery rooms which consist of 12 pens 4’xB’. The nursery decks
which are all galvanized and total woven wire are fed automatically
with a Chore-Time auger and bin system. Each nursery room is
ventilated by a heat saving Fristamat ventilator and the room is
heated by an L.B, White Heater.
When the pigs reach 8 to 9 weeks of age they will be shipped to one
of the three corporation members who is contracted to supply care,
labor, building, and electric for the hog until they are 230 lbs.
The fat hog will be trucked to Hatfield Meats by Ezra Good
Trucking. The hogs will be sold on a grade and yield basis, which for
a good quality hog, results in an extra bonus.
Hollinger Farm and Home Supply will be feeding a Master Mix
Feed to gestation through finishing hogs.
The building was constructed by Agri-Inc.
The equipment was designed and installed by Farmer Boy Ag of
Myerstown. Leon Hoover, owner of Farmer Boy Ag has designed the
complex with energy conservation in mind. The complete ven
tilation system consists of only 16 Fristamat ventilators. The
manure handling system has no mechanical moving parts, except a
pump in the holding pit outside the building.
The manure is pumped into the bottom of an earthen lagoon to
keep down odors, also a straw cover in the lagoon'will increase the
nitrogen value of the manure.
The corporation members have kept in mind that at a future time
a methane gas system can be adapted.
Haller Electric from Denver has done all the electrical work and
Leonard Martin Generator Company will supply back up
generators.
The corporation is pleased with the workmanship of all the con
tractors involved and extend a personal invitation for anyone to tour
the complex on November 28,1980.
