BALANCE SHEET
Before we look ahead to
next year, let’s look back at
last year to see the balance
sheet for the dairy price
support program.
You should already know
that it was a record high
year of dollar volume pur
chase by CCC partly because
you’re in a record high year
of milk production.
After the sales were
subtracted from the pur
chases the net cost of the
program was $1.3 billion.
That was over five tunes as
much as the $250 million cost
in 1979.
For that $1.3 billion the
CCC removed the equivalent
of 8.2 billion pounds of milk
or about 6.5 per cent all you
sent to market. That’s the
largest volume since 1962
and the flood keeps coming.
These figures are for the
marketing year from Oc
tober to September. But if
we look at the first nme
months of 1980 the CCC has

already purchased the
equivalent of 7.3 billion
pounds of milk which is 3.5
times as much as all of
calendar 1979.
Don’t blame it all on dairy
products because they were
down about 208 million
pounds of milk equivalent
under last year for the first
eight months of 1980.
One of the ideas for the
new suppport price program
is to gear the support price to
CCC purchases. As the
purchases go up, the support
price goes down.
Proposals like this have
been made by National Milk
Producers Federation,
American Farm Bureau and
USDA each with a different
formula.
As it turns out it wouldn’t
have made any difference
which one was used this
year. Under the present
situation, they all would be
down to 75 per cent of parity.
That’s just about where we
are right now.
