    D34—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, November 8,1980
GEORGETOWN, Del. -
Powdery mildew, a
relatively new disease on
soybeans, has been iden
tified for the first time on
plants growing m Delaware.
The disease was found the
third week of September on
soybeans in research plots in
the Georgetown area by a
University of Delaware
graduate student, Steve
Death. He recognized the
symptoms and consulted his
advisor, plant pathologist
Robert Carroll for con
firmation.
Laboratory analysis
supported their diagnosis
and the specific form of the
fungus causing the outbreak
was identified as
Microspheara diffusa.
Carroll says that in rune
years of work m the state,
this is the first time he’s seen
the disease on Delaware
soybeans. Since the mid
1970’s when it was first
reported on U.S. grown
soybeans, the disease has
been found in four mid
western states Georgia and,
very recently Virginia.
A check of varieties
growing in Leath’s research
plots plus 38 lines in variety
trials near Georgetown,
Felton and Newark suggests
that the outbreak is
presently limited to lower
Sussex County.
Leath says nine out of 38

Growers face new soybean
lines checked were infected.
In some cases, over 75
percent of the leaves of some
varieties were covered with
the white, talc-like growth
which is the most obvious
sign of powdery mildew.
Both Essex and Ware
varieties were infected, as
well as the green-seeded
variety, Emerald. This is the
first tune that the disease
has been found on Essex, a
vanty of considerable
economic importance in
Delaware.
It is also the first time
powdery mildew has been
identified on a vegetable
soybean.
Carroll considers the
presence of the disease to be
the result of a naturally
occurring infection. He says
it is quite possible that it was
introduced by wmdbome
spores.
Powdery mildew is
generally a late-season
disease which is fostered by
cool temperatures (below 70
degrees F). Its effect on
yield depends on when it
occurs. If plants are infected
early, before podfill is
complete, yields may be
reduced. But if infection
occurs late in the season
after the crop is made,
growers don’t need to be
concerned.
Because it does pose a
potential threat to area
soybean production, Carroll powdery mildew fungus
advises growers to be on the infects many ornamentals,
lookout for powdery mildew including lilacs,
on their beans next summer Some soybean lines are
as early as late August. The definitely resistant to the
condition is easily fungus. If control becomes
recognized because infected necessary, it is most ef
leaves appear to have been fective through varietal
dusted with talcum powder. selection, he says. Chemical
