    Veterinary school student credits 4-H experience

first kitten, 18-year-old
Charla Janney knew she
wanted to be a veterinarian.
Today, she is pursuing that
vocation, joining the in
creasing numbers of women
studying veterinary science

research, lectures from
outside specialists, field
trips to veterinary clinics,
observation of minor
operations and practical
experiences in doing the
procedures ourselves.”
Last year, she completed a
study on haemonchus
contortus, a common
parasite found m sheep. Her
theory for irradicatmg these
harmful pests was proven
correct, and may be used as
a solution for controlling
many types of internal
parasites in the future.
Less than 15 percent of the
veterinarians in this country
today are women. They are
found in almost all areas of
the field, including private
practices for large and small
animals, teaching and
research, regulatory
medicine, pubhc health,
military service, private
industry and other
specialized activities.

program totaled $23.4
million during fiscal year
1980.

half the enrolling freshmen
this fall will be female.
“I konw the road won’t be
easy,” explains Charla, who
says she’d like a large
animal practice. “But with a
4-H background behind me,
I’m sure to always be
several steps ahead.”
The national 4-H
veterinary science program
trains boys and girls, nine to
19, m the various career
options available to
veterinarians. There are
38,925 youth enrolled m
programs in the "United
States and Puerto Rico.
Awards arranged by
National 4-H Council, are
available to 4-H’ers who
excel in the program:
medals of honor to four
members from each county;
a $5O U.S. Savings Bond to
one 4-H’er from each state;
24 expense-paid trips to the
59th National 4-H Congress,
Nov. 30-Dec.4, in Chicago,
m., where six national
winners each will receive
$l,OOO scholarships.

USDA approved more than
46,000 applications
requesting program aid,

Under the emergency feed
program, financial aid to
farmers may be authorized
when a natural disaster has
reduced the amount of feed
normally produced on the
applicant’s farm and the
applicant must make larger
than-normal purchases of
feed.
Participants may be
reimbursed up to 50 percent
of the cost for feed pur
chased. The maximum
authorized amount of this
aid was increased Aug. 11
from two cents to three cents
per pound of grain
equivalent for the current
drought period. During
fiscal 1979, $63.6 million was
approved to buy 3 3 billion
pounds of feed.
