No, hog prices haven’t suddenly gone through the roof. The occasion for the whopping figure was the consignment of the 300,000 th head at the Stockyard’s weekly feeder pig auction. Bulk of the price for the Berk-Ramp cross is at tributed to the $5OO savings bond that was awarded by the Stockyards to the con signor of the 300,000 th feeder. Winner of the bond was Milton F. The winning pig was among a load of 70 he consigned on Tuesday. Lewis may have had a premonition about the award earlier Tuesday. On the way to the Stockyards, about five miles outside of Lancaster, Lewis remarked to his wife: “They gave that $5OO bond away already, haven’t they?” “No,” she replied, “ac cording to Lancaster Far ming it should be givenaway today.” “Wouldn’t it be something, if we won it,” Lewis remarked. The 300,000 th celebrity led off the feeder pig sale and brought a respectable $2.75 a pound. It was purchased by Lancaster Stockyards at the final rap of the gavel by auctioneer Merle Eberly. The Stockyards opened the first graded feeder pig auction in this area in June, 1974. It started as a monthly auction, increased to twice a month and finally weekly when consignments reached as high as 3600 head.
