Agway sales group views latest swine research

LEXINGTON, IL. -
Agway swine feed salesmen
got a first-hand look at the
latest in swine research and
facilities at the FS Research
Farm of Growmark, Inc.
located just north of
Bloomington, H. last week.
Research at the farm is
centered on health and
feeding programs for both
swine and feedlot cattle. The
study facility, which is
jattemed as closely as
lossible after farmer-owned
commercial operations, is

FS Services, Inc. and Illinois
Grain, Inc.,which operates
in the three-state area of
Illinois, lowa and Wisconsin.
Also, taking part in the
tour was Charles Taylor,
manager of the farm.
A farrow-to-finishing
operation, the research farm
maintains a herd of about 135 .
to 140 breeding females.
Only boars are brought into
the herd. The females are
three-way crosses of
Hampshire-Yorkshire-Chester

first beat after conception.
Eight farrowing groups are
maintained, with 36 crates in
the farrowing house.

In January, 1979, a new
breeding-gestation building
was opened on the farm. It is
totally environmentally
controlled, heating and air
conditioning.
A clear roof system, with
no collectors, permits the
solar heating of attic air,
which is pulled down into the
building during the winter

and vented to the outside
during the summer. .
“We estimate that we’r(*}
saving about 15 to 20 percent
in heating costs,” Dr. Pearl
said. '
The building, a modified
open-front, also features a
system of side doors, which
can be opened or closed
according to the weather.
Everything except
replacement gilts are
confined on slatted floors.
Gilts are kept outside until a
two-stage selection is made
at six and seven months. The
final selection is made on the
basis of feet, legs, con-
