“We think there is
tremendous potential for
increased soybean sales to
China,” says Maryland
soybean board chairman,
Leon Schmick. “This year
China stepped up purchases
of U.S. soybeans to cover one
million metric tons. That’s
up from 850,000 tons in 1979
which was a ten-fold in
crease over the 85,000 tons
China purchased m 1978.
“With a quarter of the
world’s population to feed
and the Chinese govern
ment’s commitment to
unproving diets by providing
more meat, we feel confident
that China will develop into
one of our major markets for
soybeans,” says Schmick.
He added that in coming
months soybean growers
will be investing a portion of
their grower investment
checkoff funds in market
development activities to
help increase soybean sales
to the PRC.
