C22—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, October 25,1380 Crowning of Apple Queen USA BY MARY MYERS Staff Correspondent CARROLL VALLEY - Katherine Solenberger from Virginia was crowned Miss Apple Queen 1980 on Friday evening at the Carroll Valley Golf Club near Fairfield. The coronation was the highlight of the Adams County Apple Harvest Festival. Miss Solenberger is the daughter of C. Robert and Bessie Solenberger, fruit growers from the Win chester area. She is a piano student in the creative arts program at Shenandoah College and Conservatory. The new queen was also named Miss Congeniality. The blacksmith today might not be found with a shop in a livery stable but the hammer, anvil, and red hot iron are still familiar sights. Youngsters partake in a fun but messy game an apple pie eating contesl honor the fruit of the day. CLEMENTON Awards and recognition come in many forms. Camden County 4-H’ers were recognized for their pursuit of excellence at the Annual 4- H Achievement Night held recently in Voorhees. The county medal awards were given on the basis of excellence in a project or program area. Each award was sponsored by either a local organization or a national company. FROM THE YEARLINGS 4-H CLUB- Jerry Barrett, This award was voted her by the other 10 contestants. Miss Jom Lynn Hunt, apple queen from Michigan and a cosmetologist, was chosen first runner-up. Second runner-up was Keela Keets Lyda, a registered nurse, the North Carolina apple queen. This year’s festival at tracted a record-breaking crowd which annually draws 50,000 persons. Special features were the strolling entertainers, colorful tours of the or chards, handcrafters and artists. Many appealing apple delights were prepared while onlookers watched and enjoyed the festivities. Other clubs that participated received excellent ratings were: Long-A-Commg, Yearlings, Discovery Club, Goofy Growers, Warwick Hill, Bad News Bakers. Representing Pennsylvania in the Apple Queen Contest was Kris Shutt from Orrtanna, Adams County, the hometown favorite. -
