Md. official warns farmers
about state fuel law
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -
Maryland Secretary of
Agriculture Wayne A.
Cawley, Jr. says some
farmers may not be aware of
a state law which could
result in a heavy fine and/or
imprisonment for non
compliance.
Specifically, the law is
Article 56-Section 148 of the
Annotated Code of Maryland
and is known as the
Petroleum Transporter’s
Law.
In general,' it requires

anyone who transports
petroleum products in a
device having a capacity
exceeding 50 gallons (ex
clusive of the fuel tank used
for propulsion of the vehicle)
to register annually with the
State Comptroller.
It also stipulates that an
identification marker
provided by the Comp
troller’s office be affixed to
each vehicle used for
transporting.
Secretary Cawley
cautions, “This includes any
farmer who might transport
motor fuel or residual oils
number 4,5 and 6 even if that
fuel is for agricultural use
and even if he owns the
vehicle used to cany that
fuel.
“Although the law is
spelled out for commercial
transporters, it also applies
to farmers who may move
such fuel between farms or
those who use a pick-up
truck to carry fuel from their
farm to equipment in a held
