Alt— Lancaster Farming, Saturday, October 11,1980 HARRISBURG - The Herr sisters of Narvon, Lancaster County, swept the championships in the Junior Dorset Breeding sheep show on Sunday during the 24th Annual Keystone In ternational Livestock Ex position. Barbara Herr exhibited both the champion and reserve champion ram. The champion ram was the first place fall ram lamb. Judge Gary Ricketts, of Urbana, Maryland 4-H team wins honors TIMONIUM, Md. - For the second time in 18 days, the Maryland 4-H livestock judging team finished in the top five in regional youth contests at major East Coast livestock shows. The team placed third last Wednesday in a field of 15 state FFA and 4-H teams during the Eastern National Livestock Show at Timonium, Md. It was also first on September 13 among nine youth teams from five states competing at the Eastern States Exposition in West Springfield, Mass. Both accomplishments were identical to the achievements of last year’s Maryland team. The victory at West Springfield marked the fifth consecutive year of livestock judging domination by Maryland 4-H teams at the Eastern States Exposition. Meg Peverly, 17, of Bel Air was v ' individual over-all id. She also Local Juniors take top honors Illinois, went to the second place Nix Besser fall ram lamb for his reserve champion. Barbara also took the championship honors with her yearling Dorset ewe, Nix Besser 829. The reserve champion ewe was shown by Barbara’s sister, Margaret. Nix Besser 8001 was the first place spring ewe lamb. Another Lancaster County Junior brought home a placed first in cattle and swine judging. At Timonium, she finished third in sheep judging and ninth over-all. Danny Hoff, 15, of Man chester finished third in the over-all individual standings at West Springfield and sevent at Timonium. Other Maryland team members m both contests were Bill Widerman, 15, of Sykesville and Margaret Spurrier, 19, of Union Bridge. In collegiate livestock judging last week at Timonium, the University of Maryland was one _of 11 colleges and universities represented. Mary E. Rauschenberg, a member of the Maryland team, was second high in dividual in sheep judging. Miss Rauschenberg is an animal science, senior from Woodbine. She was the Maryland lamb and wool queen in 1978. Herrs sweep Dorset com , grand championship trophy. Barbara Rohrer, Quarryville, showed the grand champion Southdown ewe in the Junior Breeding Show competition. In the Suffolk show, Troy Ness, Dallastown, exhibited the reserve champion ram. The reserve champion ewe was shown by Wiliams J. MacCauley HI of Atglen. Barbara Herr continued her winning streak in the Junior Market Lamb con test. She exhibited the reserve champion lamb along with the top pen of three lambs. In the Junior Sheep Shearing Contest, several local youth placed in the top ten m the back-breaking competition. Placing first in the contest was Todd Hess, Beallsville, Washington County.
