ClS—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, Octobw 11,1980 HARRISBURG - The champion anct reserve champion pen of feeder pigs, at last week’s Keystone International Exposition Feeder Pig Show went to entries from Indiana County and Lebanon County respectively. Ken Wetzel of R 1 Rossiter captured the championship trophy with his pen of Chester White x Duroc crossbreds. His pigs were the first place entry in the heavyweight division, 56-70 pounds. They sold to Thomas Beam, Elverson for $42 a piece. Wetzel got some help on the way to the top from his two children, Renee who is 12 years old and Kenny who is 10. Both children are members of their local 4-H dub. Back home in Indiana County, Wetzels have both a commercial and purebred hog operation. They keep about 60 purebred Chester White sows along with 60 sows in their farrow to finish setup. Wetzel explained bis champion pen of pigs was all from one litter. Altogether, there were 14 pigs in the litter. The pigs that were entered m the KILE com petition were the remaining Uttermates the others had previously taken the champion and reserve champion pen honors at the Ohio State Fair, said Wetzel. The litter was sired by a Chester White boar, Ultrawave. The reserve champion pen of feeder pigs at KILE was shown by Christian S. Seaman, Grantville. The Yorkshire x Duroc crossbreds placed first in their lightweight class, 35-45 pounds. They, too, were from the same litter the sow had farrowed a total of 11 pigs. The pen sold to Abe Diffenbach, New Holland for $27 each. Ten-year-old Hazlett has grand HARRISBURG - Ten year-old Scott Hazlett exhibited a barrow for the first time at the Keystone International Livestock Exposition. By the end of the competition Monday af ternoon. Scott and bis heavyweight Duroc barrow had defeated close to 100 other exhibitors and their Ten-year-old Scott Hazlett showed his heavyweight Duroc barrow to the grand championship in the Barrow-On-Foot Division during the 24th Keystone In ternational Livestock Exposition. Deputy Secretary of Agriculture Chet Heim was on hand for the award presentation. Pa, pigs » The reserve champion pen of feeder pigs was exhibited by Christian Seaman, Grantville, Lebanon. Pictured with the pen is Daniel Seaman, 17. This was Seaman’s first championship at KILE. At home in Lebanon County, Seaman has a total con finement farrowing house where he keeps about 90 sows. The first place medium weight pen was exhibited by Kim Brackbill, of Mechanicsburg, Cum berland County. They also sold to Diffenbach for $36 a head. The high selling feeder pig was consigned by Rodger Bankert, E 3 Hanover, This Duroc pig, sired by HP Red Horse, sold for $llO to Kenneth Yearick, Mill Hall. The First Annual Feeder entries and received the title of grand champion. The young hog showman hails from State College, Centre - County. He was coached and supported on his way to exhibiting the grand champion barrow at KILE by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Hazlett. Scott’s father is currently in spotlight at KILE Pig Show and Sale was - judged by Henry A. W. Gruber, Allentown. The 208 pound Yorkshire x Duroc crossbred was exhibited by Lavem and Marilyn Weller, Dwight, Illinois, Pennsylvania swine producers swept most of the championships in the Open Barrow On-Foot com petition. Penn State took both the champion and reserve champion trophies m the Duroc division. Their champion was tagged the reserve champion of the Open Show. In the Berkshire classes, the lightweight barrow shown by Gregory Innerst of R 2 Red Lion was tagged champion by Judge Henry Gruber. TJhe reserve kslure champion was the second place lightweight barrow exhibited by Dennis Grumbme, Myerstown. Rocky Acres Farm of R 2 New Tripoli took both the champion and reserve champion honors in the Poland China competition. Calvin Lazarus of White Hall had the champion Spotted Swine, while Keith Bard of Lewistown showed the reserve champion Spotted.
