C4—Lancaster Fanning, Saturday, October 4,1980 Ida’s Notebook Ida Ris&er Our daughter has always been an animal lover. Her memory goes way back and includes the names of all of our cats for the past decade or more. I’m content to remember Smokey, the good mother cat, who always sat on the kitchen window and got the panes dirty. Or, Rainbow, whose colors matched her name, and who we found dead in her tracks in the snow back of the barn one morning many years ago. But not Cindy, she even remembers the relationship between the present cats and those old-timers. She’ll say, “That one is Smokey’s granddaughter of “He’s Rainbow’s son.” Well, this summer she and a girlfriend took a bicycle ride one Sunday evening. Philip had taken me for a nice ride on the Conestoga in our alumnium row boat and when we returned the girls had also come home. They said something new was up in the bam and finally admitted that they had brought home two tiny black and white kittens that Hot Dogs, Barbecue, Apple Pie, etc.... Yes, there still are a few places like that around here. Soon the kittens were moved to the back porch as heavy tractors and wagons were not conducive to their safety. Even now we put them in a box at night to protect them from the big cats. Pepper and Sparky are such a joy to watch as they tumble and play in my purple lilies or as they purr on our laps. The other morning one was stranded at the top of a very large pine tree and it took a lot of coaxing to get it down low enough to jump on the porch roof. The kind of animals on Lancaster County farms has changed somewhat over the years. My Grandmother had peacocks on her home farm and we bad guineas when I was a child but now these are seldom seen. The guineas were noisy and acted as our watchdogs. The farm that 1 live on now had turkeys running wild in the woods and goats and sheep in the meadow when I COME TO OUR APPLE FESTIVAL LARGE, FESTIVE APPLE DISPLAY! Program for handicapped seeks QUARRYVILLE - The Silver Shoes 4-H dub needs volunteers to help them carry out their program of assisting handicapped persons in learning to ride. The club currently meets two evenings per week with an average of 12 riding members. Ages of members ranges from 4-27 in a special arrangement which allows any interested handicapped person to participate. Ac cording to Leader Carol Henkel, Quarryville, the club currently needs people to lead horses and people to serve as “sidewalkers” who act as aides to the young people in their riding program. The group meets at Hidden Acres, located four miles south of Quarryville, and some limited transportation is available through Easter Seals which transports some of the nders from Lancaster. Carpools are also arranged to make it easier for volunteers to travel there. Mrs. Henkel said volunteers can work on a weekly basis or monthly basis as their tune permits. She pointed out that three persons are needed per was a youngster. But now we specialize and our barns are full of cows, heifers and calves. Haven’t we lost something somewhere? volunteers horse - a leader and two sidewalkers. She noted that riding is done outside until cold weather sets in, then the program is continued inside with therapeutic exercises and other teaching sessions which help the participants leant more about the care of a horse and parts of a horse. Anyone who could volunteer to help in this project is asked to call Mrs. Glenn Myer, Kirkwood, at 529-6201.
