was chock full of figures,
including several oh ex
posure to radiation and
transportation of waste from
the TMI site.
NRC estimated it would
take between 660 and 1700
truck loads of nuclear waste
to remove all of the nuclear
material from TMI Reactor
2 to Richland, Washington
where it will be buried in
shallow disposal sites.
The meeting was held to
gather public comment. The
comment period will end
November 20,1980. A similar
meeting, open to the public,
is set for Lancaster City this

After the
show part of the program
things came apart quickly.
A group of Goldsboro area
farmers had crossed the
river to attend the meeting
and wanted to discuss a
number of problems they
linked to TMI.
The government officials
pleaded ignorance on such
problems as cattle abor
tions, few birds, no bees,
cows not breeding, and other
problems the farmers
brought up.
Officials said there was no
proof of any of the problems
and told the farmers to talk
to the state Agriculture
Department.

The agency men said they
were not there to discuss the
plant or pollution, only the
cleanup and radiation.
“Where are the
specialists? Where is the
government?” Mrs. Lee
asked.
EPA’s Kirk defended the
value of the NRC’s en
vironmental impact
statement as far as it covers
humans. He said he saw no
great health or genetic
impact on animals.

The meeting broke up with
seemingly little solved.
Loads of questions were
raised on the statistics
presented and the impact of
TMI on agriculture.
The bottom-line answer
given by NRC, EPA, and
DER to most of the problems
was that a speedy cleanup of
TMI is in everyone’s best
interest.
The projected timetable
for the cleanup is five to
seven years from the date of
the TMI accident, March
28,1979.
