Stewart sentenced
to 5 year prison term
WASHINGTON, D.C. -
Former University of
Maryland Professor Wolcott
E. Stewart, president and
sole stockholder of Ex
change Market Traders, a
commodity broker from
Laurel, Maryland was
sentenced on Tuesday for 5
years imprisonment for each
of three counts of mail fraud.
Stewart was charged ten
months ago and indicted by
Federal Grand Jury in
Baltimore, Maryland on 14
counts of Mail Fraud.
The indictment charged
that during a three-month
period from March, 1978 to
June, 1978, Stewart con
tracted with fanners in
Maryland and Pennsylvania
to provide their grain to
graineries in Baltimore and
Salisbury, Maryland and in
McGaheysville and
Harrisonburg, Virginia.
Stewart then Instructed
the graineries to make
payment directly to him for
the delivered grain. Upon

for his personal gain.
Stewart was arrested by
Postal Inspectors on
January 17,1980.
Stewart was convicted on
July 11, 1900 of swindling 40
farmers out of 0200,000 worth
of grain. He was convicted
on three counts of Mail
Fraud; the jury was unable
to reach a decision on the
eleven other counts.
Stewart is appealing the
case.
