Cindy Risser captures
state gardening award
LEOLA Gardening may
be a dreaded chore for most
people, but to Lucinda
Kisser, 16, it’s been a
favorite pasttime as well as
a way of capturing the state
gardening contest winner
title.
Cindy, who hah compiled
an outstanding record in 4-H
work, won the award at the
1980 4-H National Awards
Program.
To receive her award,
Cindy completed projects in
13 categories. Some of her
favorites are: '-vegetables,
strawberries, cooking,
geology, swine, dairy, and
teen leadership.
Cindy said, “Horticulture
is probably the one I enjoyed
the most because I was on
the state horticulture
judging team for 2 years.
Cindy will be eligible to
attend National 4-H
Congress in Chicago,
November 30 to December 4.
At nationals, the top 18 4-
H’ers will have their trip
completely paid, and the top
8 will each receive a $lOOO
scholarship.
Cindy, who was picked
from among the 106,000
youth who annually take
part in the 4-H program, was
judged on the basis of
project work, leadership
ability and participation in
county and state activities.
She won a $75 U.S. Savings
Bond for her efforts.
The young gardener is the
daughter of Allen and Ida
Risser. She is a senior at
Manheim Township High
School.

Cindy, winner of the state gardening award,

and fruits.
Manheim 4-H Club, she has
been in 4-H for eight years.
She has served as president,
vice-president, secretary,
treasurer, news reporter and
recreation leader.
Locally Cindy took part in
the 4-H achievement day,
dairy 'roundup, exchange
program and leadership
banquet.
She has participated in the
State 4-H Achievement
Days, Pennsylvania 4-H
Leadership Congress,
Regional 4-H Demonstration
Day and Citizenship Short
Course.

The Cumberland County
Dairy Herd Improvement
Association will hold its
annual meeting on Thursday
evening November 20.
The dinner meeting will be
held at the-South Middleton
Fireball, just West of Boiling
Springs. Dairy refreshments
will be available at 6:30 p.m.
and the meal will be served
at 7 p.m.
At the meeting the high

projects, Cindy maintains a
500 square foot garden at her
home in Leola. For her
cooking experience, she
frequently holds 4-H cooking
meetings at her home.
As for the future, Cindy is
quite content to continue in 4-
H for now. Eventually, she
plans to attend college where
she hopes to incorporate
everything she has learned
in 4-H by studying science
and engineering.
