J. Mowery, John’s father,
said her mother was John’s
first 4-H animal and an All-
American as a Junior
Yearling in 1971.
The grand champion has
consistently been, a winner
for John in county and state
competition, and high
ranking on the national
level.
Reserve champion
Holstein was a two-year old
owned by Mike Sbertzr.
Mike said she did not place
well until she was a junior
yearling in 4-H competition.
From that point on, he said
she has taken several top
honors in her class.
This is the first time that
Mike has shown her to
receive such a high placing.
She was first in her class at
the county 4-H show this
Summer.
Champion Guernsey was a

LAMPETER Michelle
Dean, Strasburg, with her
champion 4-H baby beef,
topped a field of 30 4-H and
FFA animals to capture the
grand championship at the
West Lampeter Fair this
week.
Her 1180 pound Angus has
been selected early in the
evening as the champion of
the 4-H show which included
a total of 17 steers.
Reserve champion of the
show was exhibited by
Gerald Hess, Conestoga. His
steer was the FFA show
champion selected from 13
entries.
Judge Bill Holloway,
manager of South Branch
Angus Farms, Seven
Valleys, York County, said
both top placing animals
showed the thickness, the
meatiness and the muscle
that speaks well of the in
dustry from the producer to
the homemaker’s table.
He said the animals had a
finish that was evenly
dispersed throughout their
frame.

for the junior showmanship
