Test heifers at the Purina Dairy Research Center demonstrate that attention
to good nutrition does permit an earlier first calf. The results further show that
younger heifers are capable of producing an excellent milk flow in their first
lactation.
A group of 35 test heifers averaged 23.6 months of age when they calved. In
305-day lactations they averaged 12,884 pounds of milk. The mature equivalent
for these heifers averaged 17,025 pounds of milk
