Brazilian com increase may cut
LANCASTER - Twenty
Brazilian soybean producers
touring the U.S. last week
told the American Soybean
Association they will take
advantage of their country’s
recently announced com
subsidy to increase com
acreage this fall.
They further indicated
that they expected increased
corn acreage in their
country this year to hold
soybean acreageat the same
level as last year - the first
time since the 1940 s that
soybean acreage has not
expanded in Brazil.
A three to five percent
increase in com acres in
Brazil could mean that
nationally soybean acres
would be unchanged or
slightly below the 1979-80
level. Additional declines in
overall soybean production

The farmers agreed that
without favorable interest
rates they would not apply as
much expensive fertilizers
and chemicals or invest in
equipment for the oilseed
crop.
The Brazilian farmers
said increased use of
soybean meal in their
country’s growing poultry
and swine industry has
encouraged the government
to subsidize com at the
expense of soybean acres.
The failure of Brazil to
become self-sufficient in
wheat is an additional
reason for the shift to com,
they said nothing that wehat,
doublecropped with
soybeans, has not yielded
well and domestic needs
have required $1 billion per
year in subsidized imports.
Rather than spend that
money on foreigh com
modities, the government
has decided to invest in com
production as a substitute
for wheat, the farmers ex
plained.
They noted their gover

The farmers agreed that
they were not enthusiastic
about the idea of switching
production of soybean? to
com since current com
varieties available are not
well adapted to the climate.
Additionally, there is a
shortage of bn-farm
technology for corn
soybean crop
production from planting yields they said would only
through harvest. Average be about 40 bushels per acre.
