competition. He will com
pete with three other
national finalists from
Minnesota, Alabama, and
Colorado during the 53rd
FFA National Convention
November 10 to 14 in Kansas
City.
One and one-half days of
interviews and a review of
his application and farm
records dating back to ninth
grade await the 18-year-old
candidate. He must also
submit a slide presentation
on his operation.
“The awards committee
considers the scope and
efficiency of the enterprise,”
explained FFA advisor
Glenn Spangler. “It also
looks at what a person has
learned and where he’s
headed.”
Efficiency is a major goal
set by Beiler, who hopes to
finish his animals on
average at 220 pounds per
pig finished, reduce death
loss to one to two percent,
and achieve a feed con
version of 3.2 pounds of feed
per pound of weight gain.
“I’ll set new goals when
these are reached,” he
added.
By August of 1981, he
hopes to have his own feed
grinding operation and
someday to farm about 300
acres to supply his own feed.
