Jersey breeders from across
the nation when they attend
the 1960 All American Jersey
Show and Sale, held in
conjunction with the North
American International
Livestock Exposition in
Louisville, Ky., November 8

Saturday, November 8, is
filled with Jersey Junior
activities beginning with the
All American Junior Show at
8 a.m. judged by Max
Gordon, Winchester, Ind.,
and his consultant, Dennis
Longmire, Decatur, Ind.
The show will be followed
by the Pot O’Gold Sale at
3:30 p.m. and the Junior
Banquet and Fun Fest at
6:30 p.m. The National

honors researcher
BLACKSBURG, Va. -
Elmer H. Marth, Ph.D.,
Professor of Food Science
and Bacteriology at the
University of Wisconsin, is
the recipient of the 1960
Dairy Research Foundation
Award. He was presented
with a plaque and $lOOO
check Tuesday at the 75th
annual meeting of American
Dairy Science Association at
Virginia Polytechnic In
stitute and State University,
Blacksburg.
The award, which honors
outstanding scientific
contributions to the dairy
industry, was presented by
William W. Menz, vice
president, product research.
Dairy Research Inc.
Martb is a food
microbiologist who has
studied bacteria and fungi in
-dairy products and other
foods. Currently he is con
ducting research into factors
affecting the formation and
fate of aflatoxins in milk and
dairy products and methods
of controlling the fungi that
produce them. He has

and Production Contest

Queen will be named at the
banquet.
Katherine G. Thomas,
owner of Windy Knoll Farm,
Rockville, Md., has donated
a heifer to be sold just prior
to the Pot O’Gold Sale.
Proceeds from the sale of the
heifer will be donated to help
buy jackets to all junior
exhibitors.
Sunday’s schedule in
cludes the National Jersey
Jug Futurity Show, the most
glamorous dairy show in the
world, beginning at 12:30
p.m. Over $6OOO in prize
money will be awarded to
the top 3-year olds in the
nation, with the winner
developed a procedure using
bisulfate to inactivate
aflatoxins. Marth also is
studying the influence on
cheese yields of
psychrotrophic bacteria in
milk. Psychrotrophie
bacteria are both cold- and
heat-resistant
The researcher received
his 8.5., M.S. and Ph.D.
degrees in bacteriology from
the University of Wisconsin,
where he served on the
Department of Bacteriology
staff for several years. He
then worked as a research
microbiologist' for Kraft
Inc.’s research and
development division. In
ISS6 he joined the faculty at
the University of Wisconsin
Department of Food
Science.
The Dairy Research
Foundation administers a
grant-in-aid program of
basic research funded by
DRINC. From its formation
in 1971 to 1979, DRINC has
financed 48 basic research
projects for the dairy in
dustry.
