Ct2-l—carter Farming, Saturday, September 20,1980 Gee whiz, Summer, is it time for you to go? The heated relationship we’ve had for the past several weeks seems to be cooling a bit And, while you haven’t made any solid commitments about leaving, still, the subtle hints are there. For instance, you’ve begun your season outburst of decorating for your farewell party. Scarlet speckles are brightening the green of the dogwoods and golden overtones have started creeping across some of the plants on the hillsides. Up the road, the orchards have donned the polka dots of crimson apples, purple plums and yellowing pews. Suddenly the meadows are outfitted in acres of goldeorod, waving with the winds in their cheerful lacy costumes. Then last week one night you sneaked out to snatch the green from the cornfields and leave behind a dull, listless, dusty brown instead. The practical joke was too much for most of die stalks, and their ears are drooping with frustration. There’ll be some sadness when you finally do go. We’ll miss the special things we’ve been sharing together; af ternoon swims, supper on the back porch, fiery red gladiolus in the green vase on the buffet and platters of steaming sweet com just a half-hour removed from the field.
