saving dairymen lost
production, and preventing
early culls,” says Dan West,
a dairy researcher for
Schermg Corporation.
Sometimes called “caked
udder”, udder edema is the
term used to describe excess
build up of fluid in the tissue
of the udder.
A combination of factors
causes udder edema - an
increase in blood flow at
parturition that produces

County proved to be the
over-all powerhouse in 4-H
judging competition at the
Maryland State Fair.
After winning both the
senior 4-H poultry and
consumer education judging
contest, other Cecil County
teams captured the senior 4-
H horticulture judging
crown and placed second in
junior 4-H horticulture
judging.
Cecil County 4-H dairy
cattle' judging teams placed
second in junior competition
and fourth in the senior
event.
Also from the Eastern
Shore, a strong Queen Annes
County team had the first
and fifth-place individuals in
senior 4-H dairy cattle
judging, but lost out m the
team standings to
traditionally strong
Frederick County by two
points.
Central Maryland teams
continued their domination
of both the junior and senior
4-H livestock judging con
tests.

the udder; the weight of the
unborn calf pressing against
the veins that dram the
udder; and high blood
pressure that tends to force
fluid through tiny blood
vessels and into the udder
Generally, the first calf
heifers, and high producing
cows develop udder edema
In one study at the
University of Illinois, 96 5
percent of the first calf
heifers had detectable udder
edema
judging events will
represent the state in
regional and national 4-H
competition during the
coming fall months.

dairyman waits for the
udder edema to subside
naturally, he loses potential
income, and runs the risk the
cow might develop further
complications
