USAHA recommends lower sped*] interest to most beef cattle raisers and dairymen. One of the proposals would greatly reduce the dosage of Strain 19 vaccine used in calves. Another would raise the official age for calfhood vaccination. (Glenn Hade) 10355 Five forks Rd. Waynesboro, PA 17268 Ph. (717) 762-4985 ATTENTION AREA FARMERS! brucellosis vaccine dosages These and other proposals were made at the mid-year meeting of the committee, in July at Kansas City. Several steps remain, however, before the proposals can be acted upon by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Noting high interest in the reduced dosage recom mendations in particular, Paul Becton, director of brucellosis eradication for USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, said “we’ll do everything we can to speed the approval process along.” One of the first steps towards approval will be a review by the association’s scientific advisory com mittee. Then the I I association’s executive committee, including 50 state veterinarians and 25 to 30 allied industry officials, will be polled by mail. Meanwhile, USDA’s biologists licensing and standards officials will review the results of research conducted by scientists at the National Animal Disease Center, Ames, lowa. The preliminary data examined by brucellosis committee members in dicated that reduced dosage stimulates ample resistance against brucellosis without causing confusing levels of antibodies in the blood. One criticism of the present standard dosage of Read’s Authorized Dealers are fully aware of this special warehouse offer. Steel Products Lancaster Farming, Saturday, September 13,1980—C27 Strain 19 vaccine is that a few animals develop per sisting residual blood titers after vaccination. This can confuse blood test results and interrupt sales, especially when older calves are vaccinated. Titers are the measurement of antibodies resulting from vaccination or infection with Brucella. Titers induced by vac cination using the reduced dosage are lower and recede very rapidly, yet the degree of immunity is not significantly different from that produced by the current dose. “Being able to vaccinate animals up to 12 months of age without having to worry about false reaction to blood tests will be a great ad vantage,” said Becton. Currently, the official calfhood vaccination ages approved under program standards are 2 to 6 months for dairy breeds and 2 to 10 months for beef breeds. The latter varies slightly m some states. With reduced dosage, the vaccination ages would likely become 4 to 12 months _??2., Agn Products for Agn Industry PO Box 7343-A Birmingham, Alabama 35253 (205) 595-2181 P.O Box 325, 1308 Bobbit Drive, Garner, North Carolina 27529 (919) 772-6130 for all breeds. In high incidence states of the Southeast and South west, reduced dosage i a already used on a limited basis for adults in what is called the whole-herd vaccination plan. According to Becton, these states should have little problem implementing reduced dosage on a wide scale once the go-ahead is given. “This is important,’’ he said, “since it may be two or three years before vaccine manufacturers could prepare and label stan dardized vaccine at the reduced dosage for national distribution.” In other states, brucellosis laboratories will have to become proficient at doing vaccine viability counts and implementing other steps necessary to make the produce ready for use by veterinarians and officials in the field. In all states, those who use the vaccine will have to be trained in proper handling to assure that a high quality vaccine is safely and ef fectively administered.
