Seventeen buyers paid a total of $4,612.08 for 19 market animals. Receiving excellent support from buyers was Roy Hottle, auctioneer for the sale. A record price of $3.80 per pound was paid for the Grand Champion lamb owned by Melissa Horton, Ulster, and was purchased by Leona Meat Plant, Troy. The Reserve Grand Champion lamb weighed 94 pounds, owned by Robert Moore, Jr., Nichols, and was bought by First Bank of Troy, Troy, for $2.40 per pound. Third place lamb owned by Jennifer Price, Hollen back 4-H, weighed 106 pounds and was bought by Troy Sales Co-op for $2.20 per pound. Sixth market hog weighed 178 nounds, was owned by Dean USDA to appeal turkey ham order WASHINGTON - The U.S. Department of Agriculture will appeal a Norfolk, Va., district court’s Aug. 28 denial of its request for a one-year stay of the court’s ruling that USDA stop approval of a label calling on all-turkey product “Turkey Ham - Cured Turkey Thigh Meat”, Assistant Secretary of Agriculture Carol Tucker Foreman said today. U.S. District Court Judge Richard B. Kellam of Norfolk, Va., granted USDA a four-month stay, starting from July 3 when the original order was issued. Foreman said USDA had asked for time to verify through the rulemaking process that the labeling is Robinson, Animals Anonymous 4-H, and was purchased by Kennedy’s Country Store, East Smithfield, for $1.12 per pound. Champion market beef animal was a blue ribbon heifer owned by Keith Ayres, Troy Ag 4-H, weighed 710 pounds and was purchased by Richard Burgess, Meshoppen. not misleading. USDA also plans to ask for a stay of Kellam’s original order, pending the appeal process. The National Turkey Federation and two poultry processors jomed USDA in the request for a one-year delay. In his decision last July, Kellam said USDA had not adequately proved whether the label in question “might confuse” or mislead a substantial number of consumers into believing such products contain pork meat.” The court order was sought by the American Meat Institute, the National Pork Producers Council, and several meat producers.
