their 25 years of leadership with the Elm-Penryn 4-H Club.
Elm-Penryn 4-H leaders
PENRYN Luelia Hosier
and Carl W. Nestleroth were
honored Monday night for
their 25 years of service to
the Elm-Penryn 4-H Club.
The two long-time leaders
were presented a specially
decorated cake and fruit
baskets by the club.
Mrs. Hosier has led
youngsters in gardening,
indoor and outdoor flowers,
sweet com and strawberries
m her 25 years of leadership
with the Elm-Penryn Club.
Neslteroth’s leadership
over the past quarter cen
tury includes the areas of
hogs, tobacco, capons, and
rabbits.
The cake, decorated by
Marcella Myer, read: “Carl,
my flowers!” and “But
they’re my prize hogs” and a
scene with Mrs. Hosier and
Mr. Nestleroth m which his
hogs were invading her
flowers.
The two leaders agreed
that the 4-H club had
changed some over the
years. Twenty-five years
ago the club had a mem
bership of about 30
honored for service
youngsters. Today there are
over 100 members in the
Elm-Penryn Club.
“I’ll tell you one thing,”
Nestleroth commented.
“This club has taken a lot of
county-wide first places m
all phases over the years. ’ ’
Pair attends com tour
LANDISVILLE - Frank
Bucher, Rothsville, and
Ernest Mellinger,
Quarryville, both seed
salesman for Hoffman
Seeds, Inc, Landisville,
recently joined 21 men from
New York, Pennsylvania
and West Virginia on a tour
of the company’s seed com
production facilities in
Central Illinois.
The pair’s trip was
provided because of in
creased sales of Funk’s G
Hybrid Com.
While m Illinois, the group
observed the seed com
production facilities in Yates
City and Bloomington, and
toured research plots of com
and soybeans.
Mrs. Hosier, who is
leaving the 4-H Club, said
she would still be available
to offer advice if it’s needed.
Mr. Nestleroth will continue
as leader with the Elm-
Penryn Club.
The highlight of the tour
was a trip through Funk’s
Research Acres near
Bloomington, where the first
open com hybrids were
developed and hybrid com
research has continued over
a period of 75 years.
The seed men were told
that an adequate seed com
crop will be harvested this
Fall.
