reduce electricity use is to
change your family’s hot
water using habits.
Here are some tips on
saving water in the home.
Encourage your family
especially teenagers to
take short showers instead of
baths. Or install a con
trolled-flow regulator which
limits the amount of water
that comes through the
showerhead. These devices
reduce the spray to about 3
gallons per minute from the
usual 5 to 10 gallon flow. You
can buy this inexpensive
item at a plumbing shop and
install it yourself.
It’s possible you’ll save
around 700 gallons of hot
water a year if you fill the
basin only half way while
shaving. Letting the hot
water run in a steady stream
uses about 6 gallons of water
per shave.
Caution family members
to run the automatic dish
washer only when there is a
full load. Pre-rinse dishes in
cold water and always use
cold water for operating the,
garbage disposer. Cold

water solidifies and carries
fats along with other food
particles through the drain
pipes and saves hot water.
Fix and dripping faucets;
a dripping hot water faucet
is particularly wasteful.
Caution all family members
to turn off faucets com
pletely. In the laundry, use
cold water when possible
and wash only full loads. Hot
water is necessary to get
some heavily soiled clothes
clean and to sanitize clothes.
Clean your water heater
thermostat. If you have a
dishwasher, a 135-140*
temperature is recom
mended. Lower the setting to
110-120* if you wash dishes
by hand. Wrap insulation
around the electric water
heater and pipes to save
electricity use. Although
heaters are already in
sulated, adding more in
sulation further reduces heat
loss.
