animals judged for type,
club members are judged for
their job of training their
animal and showing it. They
are also judged on fitting the
animal for show.

H’ers over 13 years of age

Lederach, Diane Johnson,

LAPORTE William H.
Gregory, Sullivan County
Extension director on Penn
State’s extension service
staff, will retire September
30 with 32 years of service.
A native of Brodhead
sville, Monroe County,
Gregory was appointed to
the Sullivan County Ex
tension Service staff m 1948.
He previously served as a
vocational agriculture and
veterans training instructor.
He received a bachelor of
science degree in
Agricultural education from
Penn State in 1940.
Through his leadership,
Sullivan County has one of
the highest percentages of
youth enrolled in Penn
sylvania 4-H work. In recent
years, county 4-H members
have been recognized at
district, state, and national
levels.
Gregory was instrumental
in organizing numerous
educational dairy
management clinics and
introduced the unit

members ages 9 to 13 were:

Harleysville, Kristen
Keener, Telford and Jean
Gehringer.

town Fair Grounds, August

Award in 1970.
He assisted in initiating
the annual Bow Hunters
Festival which has attracted
thousands of hunters from
Pennsylvania and nearby
states.
The retiring extension
agent worked closely with all
agricultural cooperatives m
northeastern Pennsylvania
in developing an educational
program for farmer
cooperative leaders.
He also has been a leader
in the selection of scholars
for the annual Pennsylvania
Association of Farmer
Cooperatives Summer Youth
Institute held at Ship
pensburg State College.
In 1974 he received the
Master Educator Award
from the Pennsylvania
Association of Farmer
Cooperatives.
Gregory advocated the
conservation of fuel, tune,
and soil through no-till
systems of agriculture for
corn, small grains, hay, and
pastures. In recent years,

A typical 4-H dairy project
is carried by the 4-H
member for at least three
years, one year as a calf, one
year as a yearling heifer and
then as a two year old
producing milk. Some 4-H
members elect to keep their
better projects through more
than one lactation of milk, a
new lactation being started
yearly.
4-H dairy club work in the
county is conducted with the
help of volunteer adult
leaders and is supervised by
county agent, Joseph H.
Way.
more than 50 percent of
Sullivan County’s corn
acreage has been grown
using minimum or no-till
systems.
In 1976 be received the
Sullivan County Chamber of
Commerce “Man of the
Year” Award and Lions Club
Certificate of Service for
outstanding leadership m

development.
For his service to
agriculture, Gregory was
winner of a Distinguished
Service Award in 1969
presented by the National
Association of County
Agricultural Agents.
The retiring extension
agent is a member of the
Sullivan County Chamber of
Commerce, Delta Theta
Sigma and Epsilon Sigma
Phi fraternities, and the
Pennsylvania and National
associations of County
Agricultural Agents.
Gregory and his wife, the
former Jean Lewis, of
Blooms burg, a retired
teacher, are the parents of a
son.
