equpment valued at $5OO
will •be awarded in the
Eastern National Production
Tested Steer Show, a 10-
month judging contest which
begins November 8.
The contest, designed to
measure feed efficiency and
give livestock breeders an
idea of which type steer puts
on the most poundage at the
least cost, is sponsored by
the Eastern National
Livestock Show.
The Eastern National
conducts a number of
educational programs in
addition to its annual Fall
Show to be held at the
Maryland State Fairgrounds
here September 26 - October
1.
Entry in the Production
Tested Steer Show is open to
steers of beef breeding,
purebred, grade or
crossbred, sired by a
registered beef bull and bom
after January 1, 1980. Each
Eastern National lists
steer show prizes
farm, firm or family may
enter three steers. The entry
fee is $25 per animal.
The steers must be
delivered on November 7 or 8
to the central test site in
Maryland where they will
begin the roughage test
under the supervision of the
Eastern National
management. During the
first week of April, the steers
will be delivered to the
Devereux Soleil Farm,
Downingtown, Pa. where
supervised feeding of the
cattle on a computerized
system that measures feed
consumption will begin.
While on the test, each
steer will be officially
weighed a total of eight
times before being
slaughtered and the car
casses judged for cutability,
yield and grade.
The exhibitor of the grand
champion steer in the
contest will receive the top
prize of $5OO in cash and $5OO
in equipment and supplies
a
donated by Harry Landis, of
Cruetzburg, Inc., Paradise,
Pa.
The exhibitor of the
reserve champion will win
$250 and other cash prizes
will be awarded.
