The 40 x 70 foot bank bam
was owned by Warren Lentz
on Mine Road near King
Street.
624
Lentz told Lancaster
Fanning his son Ronald,
who lives on the neighboring
farm, sighted the blaze when
he went out to milk around
4:30 Sunday morning. Lentz
added that another neighbor
who had gone out to milk at
about 4:10 saw nothing of the
fire.

According to Lehman, the
fire company got the alarm
at 4:55 a.m. It was reported
by Carl and Karen Shirk,
tenants at the farm. They
were alerted by Ronald
Lentz that the barn was
burning, turned in the
alarm, and assisted in
freeing 10 replacement
heifers from the inferno.
An estimated $65,000 loss
was reported by the fire
chief. This involved only the
stored crops that burned.

It took fire fighters three
hours to get the blaze under
control, said Lehman, and
they didn’t leave the scene
until late Sunday afternoon.

Township Companies in
cluded Prescott, Avon,
Hebron, and Friendship.
There were 5 tankers on
assist from neighboring
companies.
About 50 friends and
neighbors turned out Sunday
and Monday until noon to
assist Lentz m the clean up.
According to Lentz, the
fire company required the
immediate removal of the
smoldering bales which they
began to pile in an adjoining
field. Later the bales were
hauled to fill a neighbor’s
abandoned mine hole.
Volunteers ran bull dozers
and dump trucks and made
short work of what would
have been a mountainous
