Lycoming agent to retire
WILLIAMSPORT - Paul
T. Rothrock, Lycoming
County Extension director
on Penn State extension ser
vice staff, will retire August
31 with 33 years of service.
Appointed to the Extension
Service staff in 1947, he serv
ed as an assistant agent in
Umon and Bucks counties
prior to his promotion to
Lycoming County agent in
1955.
A native of Bangor, Nor
thampton County, Rothrock
received a bachelor of
science degree from Penn
State in 1947, majoring m
agronomy. He served three
years in the U.S. Army dur
ing World Warn.
During his tenure as
Lycoming County extension
agent, he conducted a senes
of test plots of com, alfalfa,
wheat, and soybeans to col-
lect yield and performance
data on the more suitable
varieties to grow m the area.
These plots were open to in
spection during numerous
crops tours.
In an effort to preserve the
family farm and save tax
dollars, Rothrock conducted
a senes of meetings over a
10-year penod to encourage
farmers to initiate estate
planning.
He worked closely with
local government personnel
m conducting training ses
sions for newly elected of
ficials to assist them m car
rying out their duties.
The retiring Extension
agent assisted in conducting
cultural and disease and in
sect control programs for
fruit growers m a three
county area. Rothrock
helped a group of local fruit
and vegetable growers in
forming the Williamsport
Outdoor Growers Market in
1975. The market presently
operates three days a week
in three locations.
Active m promoting im
proved relationships and
understanding between
farmers and city residents,
he assisted m organizing the
Lycoming County Farm-City
Week and served as chair
man for nine years.
He also keeps all segments
of society informed of
agricultural and general in
terest items through broad
casts on three stations on a
continuing basis.

and a new feeder pig show and sale will be in the spotlight
October 2-6 here at the 24th Keystone International
Livestock Exposition. It will be held at the Farm Show
Complex.
Due to the unsettled pseudorabies situation m Penn
sylvania, a moratorium has been placed on swine
breeding classes until next year.
Over $84,900 will be offered in premiums and awards at
this year’s KILE, with $10,140 gomg toward swine show
premiums. Deadline for entries is August 31.

Dairy Bowl Team placed

State 4-H Achievement Days
last week at Penn State.
The Junior Livestock
Judging Team consisting of
Bill MacCauley, Don Caims,
Ernie Barrett, and Steve
Gontarz was coached by
Cheryl Moran, County Agent
and Nancy Sayre, Devereux
Soleil Farms.

for the Junior Team, they
are looking forward to trying
out for the Senior Team next

now eligible to compete m
the Regional Dairy Bowl.
