Drive carefully
in country
Safer driving on rural
roads means being prepared
for the unexpected, cautions
Ronald R. Damn, Extension
farm management specialist
at Penn State.
Around the next bend or
over the lull could be a slow
moving vehicle, a cow, a
deep hole m the road, or
someone slowly pulling out
of a farm lane or side road.
Though rural roads in
clude busy toll roads and
dual-lane state and national
routes, the county and
township blacktop or gravel
roads are often traveled by
an interesting array of
drivers, young people
roaring into town; city folks
out for a leisurely drive
through pastoral lands for
scenery and a chance to
breathe some relatively
fresh air; some old-tuners
will poke along in the middle
of the road as if it were a
private lane; and many
farmers will pay more at
tention to livestock and
fields along with way than
the road.
Then there are all sorts of
vehicles along rural roads.
This makes it necessary to
drive knowingly and
defensively to amve where
you are going safely.
Moderate speed is a good
rule, says Daum. Try to be
considerate on gravel and
dirt roads during dry
weather to avoid kicking up
too much dust. Residents
along the way do not ap
preciate vast clouds of dust
engulfing them every tune a
fast car goes by.
