Stephanie Schaich, 1401 Rothsville Road,
Latitz, was the only winner m the junior
division from Lancaster. Her project was
a plaid Pendleton wool skirt with a front
kick pleat, but she made an ivory blouse
with eight pm tucks on each side as an
accessory. She also made a Bermuda bag
tb match the skirt.
A member of the Lititz-Rothsville Zig-
Zaggers for five years, Stephanie, 14, said
she didn’t expect to win at the regional
contest at all. “I was really excited when I
won. I expected to get to the professional
judges because I really worked, but I
didn’t expect to go to regionals.”
She says the hardest part of the project
was matching the plaids on the wool skirt.
To get them even, she says, “I pinned and
did two rows of basting and then sewed
between the basting.” To make it perfect,
however, she did end up cutting out a
second back panel, which was a
frustration, because a hand picked zipper
was already m place.
Stephanie admits, “I try to make
something to catch the judge’s eye. The
reason I made this pattern is that I made

In addition to matching plaids,
Stephanie says, “I also learned to do a
tailor’s hem.” When she had trouble fin
ding wool for her skirt, her mother called
on a friend who hves in Oregon, the home
of Pendleton, and Stephanie got her wool
for $5 a yard, making the project very
economical.
When sewing, Stephanie says, “Most of
the time I ask my mother and she helps
me, but I also call one of the leaders if I
have a question. I have to get it perfect. I
don’t know why.”
She worked steadily this summer, but
admitted that it was a problem completing
the skirt. One drawback came when she
was ready to sew the purse and the elec
tricity went off in one of the major storms.
“I went to a friend’s,” Stephanie recalled.
Sewing is an advantage Stephanie says,
because it’s cheaper. “You can put the
kind of fabric and the kind of pattern you
want together and make something really
neat. I look a long time and look at pattern
books and think of last year’s fashion
review.”
A 4-H enthusiast, Stephanie states, “I
like 4-H because I want to achieve
something. Some friends don’t achieve
much in the summer but I like 4-H because
