    Al6—Lancaster Famine, Saturday, July 12,1980
BY DICK ANGLESTEIN
CLAY TOWNSHIP - It
looked like Kansas in
Lancaster County on
Thursday.
Whenever you get five
combines, several gram
trucks and carts, plus a
couple of tractors pulling
balers and wagons all in one
area at the same time, it
resembles more of a Mid
west or Western harvesting
operation than East Coast
agriculture.
But that was the scene on
the Melvin Nolt farm near
Schoeneck Thursday af
ternoon.
That sized harvesting
crew made short work of 18
acres of wheat, including
baling of the straw.
Neighbors and friends
brought a rainbow of
equipment colors and names
to help Nolt and lessen his
harvesting task while
rebuilding following the
severe storm damage of a
couple weeks ago.
New tobacco shed rises on the Nolt farm. Work
will begin soon on a barn to replace structure
razed by fire.

Little bit
Tom Zartman started the
cutting with his Gleaner L.
Soon, Earl Martin added his
big green Deere 6620 hillside.
Next were added a couple
of Masseys of Allen Horst
and Walt Augsburger. John
Zimmerman was in the cab
of his New Idea.
John Hoover brought a
gram truck and Raymond
Burkholder was helping with
the baling.
As the harvesters criss
crossed the three wheat
fields, others were putting
the finishing touches on a
new tobacco shed to replace
one damaged m the storm.
Work will also begm
shortly on the construction of
a new bam. The Nolt bam,
along with 37 steers, were
lost in a fire caused by the
storm.
Yes,- it sure looked
something like Kansas in
Lancaster County. Even the
weather was hot, sultry and
near 90 degrees. Dust and
Id Guard
of Kansas in Lancaster Co.
chaff swirled about just like
on the Plains.
Except in Kansas, it’s
difficult to see anything on
the horizon but more and
more wheat.
And the county wheat
looked much better than that
of the drylands farther west.
It was heavy and lodged only
m the heavy nitrogen areas.
The windrows of straw
were equally heavy. It didn’t
take long to make a bale.
If the wheat yield is
anything like Nolt’s barley
harvest, he’ll be well
satisfied.
In a neighboring field with
soybeans just now peeking
through he harvested 100
bushels of barley to the acre
his best ever.
