Composting saves energy
NORRISTOWN -
Homeowners can make a
real contribution to energy
conservation and ecology by
composting their garden
residue, grass dippings and
leaves, says Paul N. Reber,
Montgomery County agent.
By composting tne large
volume of organic trash you
can reduce garbage pickup
considerably and, at the
same time, produce a good
source of organic matter for
the home landscape
During the summer,
usable compost can be
produced in a very few
weeks You can accomplish
this by following these
simple rules
Use only organic material
such as grass clippings,
leaves or light primings.

Crop Care
Be sure to introduce a
source of decomposing
bacteria. A rich garden soil
can be used to get bacteria
into the pile Soil can be
added to each layer of
organic matter, followed by
a light compacting
Aerate the compost pile or
bin regularly
Maintain suitable
moisture levels in areas with
low summer rainfall
Add heat generating
materials such as grass
clippings or high car-

Shredding helps make
uniform compost, out it is
not essential.
You can use the compost
as soon as it has decomposed
to the desired texture It
may be incorporated into the
soil to maintain tilth and
friability, or it may be used
on the surface for weed
control and water con

compost may be combined
with soils to make excellent
potting media for house
