(Charlie) Gunn, 94, died July 2, 1980 at Wesley Willows Retirement Center in Rockford, 111. where he had resided the past several years. Gunn was the last of the early hybrid com breeders and, along with Thomas H. Roberts, Sr., was in strumental m the founding and growth of DeKalb Agßesearch, Inc. Gunn was bom February 19, 1886 on an 80-acre farm near Mt. Palatine in Putnam County, 111. In his late teens he worked as a carpenter m the summer and with a seed com company in the winter. Gunn went to Grover, Colorado in 1911 to manage a small ranch, married Irma Barnett in 1912 and the couple moved to DeKalb, 111 m 1917 Gunn worked with the DeKalb County Agricultural Association, forerunner of the present DeKalb AgEesearch, as head of the seed division. Each year for 15 years, he would travel to Idaho to buy choice red clover and alfalfa seed direct from the growers for distribution to local farmers. Gunn pollinated corn known as Western Plowman and from that he developed his own strain known as Gunn’s Western Plowman, which became very popular m DeKalb County and surrounding areas Gunn’s interest in the hybridization of corn began in 1923, when Secretary of Agriculture Henry C Wallace spoke at a Farm Bureau picmc. After the picmc, Wallace pointed out to Gunn and Tom Roberts, Sr the company’s general manager, that hybrids would far outyield the current strains of open pollinated corn Gunn began inbreeding in 1924 and the research con- .. Gunns new hybud was m 1932. The hybrid looked very promising so a small field was grown m 1933 A husking contest resulted in the hybrid outproducing the open-pollinated Plowman variety by 21 bushels per acre. Seed was first offered for sale m 1934 from a total of 412 bushels which had been produced That event marked the beginning of DeKalb’s growth as a leader in the hybrid seed industry. In 1940, Gunn produced a hybrid called 404 a which was widely used across the entire combelt. At one time, this hybrid was the most widely used of any on the market. Gunn served the company in varying capacities. He was on the board of directors for many years. His wife, Irma, preceded him in death He is survived by one daughter, Clara; and a son, Ralph, who followed in his father’s footsteps as a corn breeder for DeKalb for many years. Thomas Roberts, Jr , chairman of the board of DeKalb, described Gunn as “the finest of men; the kind of man that we were proud to be associated with ” According to Roberts, “Charlie was always sup portive, applymg the best of Christian morality to his judgements; a man to whom we owe a great deal for his contributions to the com pany. He earned our greatest respect and esteem.” Service and serves as sales manager.
