Cl6—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, July 12,1980 Delaware ag field day scheduled for August 13 # GEORGETOWN, Del - Plans are well underway for the 36th annual Farm and Home Field Day at the University of Delaware’s Agricultural Substation near Georgetown. This event, set for August 13, 1980, gives farmers and non-farmers alike a chance to observe what the University’s Agricultural Experiment Station and Cooperative Extension Service are doing for the people who live in Delaware Activities will begin at 9 30 a m During the day, there will be special wagon and bus tours of com, soybean, vegetable, and poultry projects around the Sub station, as well as tours of the University swine facihties There will be a plant clinic where farmers and home gardeners can brmg plant problems for diagnosis by a panel of experts There will also be a consumer education program in the grove, emphasizing energy conservation and also the art of pepper pickling Some of the highlights of the crops projects that will be on view are variety testing, irrigation, tillage practices, fertility studies, chemical weed control, spacing studies, and disease control One field experiment begun this year by Agricultural Experiment Station researcher Donald L Sparks will help farmers determine the rates of boron and potassium fertilizers needed to maximize corn yields under intense management situations P pi & lih j m'" -# f' 5 / K ifWl 717-949-6501 Buffalo Springs, PA 717 949-650 Rt 419-1 mile West of Schaefferstown, Lebanon Co s^' involving irrigation and high plant populations Growers will also have a chance to take a look at Elf soybeans According to researcher David L Regehr, these Midwestern-bred beans are good for growmg under center-pivot irrigation in high fertility situations (e g after several years of com) without lodging Regehr is comparing Elf beans grown with and without irrigation, while researcher William F Ritter and research associate Robert P Eastburn are monitoring evapotran spiration to determine the amount of water use under both conditions At noon a traditional fried chicken luncheon will be served in the farm grove by members of the Delaware Poultry Improvement Association Additional refreshments will be on sale throughout the day. Field Day will also feature a number of educational exhibits of interest to far mers and consumers.
