Home gardners can cope with flooding
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
If summertime floodwaters
cover your garden, you
should assume that your
vegetables are con
taminated, says Charles A.
McClurg, Extension
vegetables specialist and
associate professor of
horticulture at the
University of Maryland in
College Park.
“Unless you are sure there
is no danger from bacterial
contamination, don’t use
fruits and vegetables that
were ready for harvest at the
time of flooding—unless they
can be disinfected, peeled
and thoroughly cooked. ”
Leafy vegetables, such as
lettuce, cabbage, mustard,
kale, collards, spinach,
Swiss chard and celery, are
the most susceptible to
bacterial contamination
from floodwaters, he said.
Also highly susceptible are
fleshy vegetables and berry
