Blue mold in fields

their seedbeds or who have
tobacco fields near those of a
neighbor known to be in
fected.
“Thus far, the weather has
been a big plus,” Lueck said.
“This week’s hot, dry
weather has been in our
favor and has held down any
spread of the fungus.”
But both Lueck and
Yocum expressed concern
should the weather make a
turn for the worst to cloudy,
cooler and damp conditions.
Numerous reports of the
mold moving from seedbeds
to fields were coming into
the Extension Office on
Friday, Lueck said.
“It has developed rapidly
in the seedbeds in spite of
control spraying,” he said.
“We have instances of it
attacking large plants, some
18 mches across. Fields close
to active seedbeds are
particularly susceptible. It’s
vital to get rid of those seed
beds as soon as tran
splanting is completed.”
It is estimated that about
80 percent of the tobacco
transplanting is completed.
This puts some county
growers a bit behind their
normal schedule.
Early transplanted
tobacco is looking good,
according to Lueck, par
ticularly with the hot, sunny
weather. Problems are

Seed bed problems with
blue mold have been at
tributed to the lack of a
regular and effective
spraying program in the
beds.
In neighboring Maryland,
blue mold has been found m
the fields of St. Mary’s and
Calvert counties.
“We are not certain what
we are dealing with,” said
Claude McKee, extension
tobacco specialist and
agronomist at the University
of Maryland.
“It is definitely blue mold,
but some of the symptoms
are different from blue mold
that we saw before 1979.
“In some fields m St.
Mary’s county, the disease
had gone systemic (affecting
the entire plant), but far
mers said they could not see
it m the beds.”
Field spraying has been
recommended in Maryland,
too.
It is also possible that
growers may be en
countering a new strain of
the fungus, McKee added.—
