Later, he returned to Pennsylvania to work for Miller’s Limestone Quarry and subsequently Ziegler Brothers Feed Company in Gardners, Adams County. Fanning was still m his blood because in 1951 he started in the broiler and turkey business. In 1956, be added layers and gradually switched over entirely to this phase of poultry operations. In 1960, he joined D.G. Horn and Company as territory salesman, selling feed to independent broiler, turkey and egg producers. In 1965, he was promoted to Major Account Represen tative and two years later started servicing all com pany-owned flocks. In 1971, when Horn and Company merged with Miller and Bushong to become Penn field Corporation, he was placed in charge of the ventilating / 5 company’s broiler breeder flocks. Gingrich retired from that post just last month. Egg Industryman of the Year Leininger bagan farming 28 years ago with his parents. Six years after taking over the family operation, he put up his first chicken house, which was only 14 years ago. In the past decade and a half, the operation has grown tremendously. The Lemingers farm 800 acres, about 500 in com. The family team includes wife, Allegra, and sons, David and Mike. He received the State 4-H Alumni Recognition Award in 1975 and was named a Master Farmer a year later. He is a member of the Reinholds Lions Club, Pennsylvania Farmers Association, the Lancaster County Farm and Home Federation. He is a Past President of the Ephrata Young Farmers Association, 1 the County Poultry Association and the State Poultry Federation. He will serve as Finance Chairman for the National Young Farmer Educational Institute to be held in Her shey Dec. 5-9. As Turkey Industryman of the Year, Konhaus moved into operation of the four generation family farm after high school graduation. He began in dairying and sold milk through a retail outlet. After 15 years in the dairy business, he moved into general farming and a small flock of turkeys. He grows all of the feed for his present flock of 30,000. His seasonal processing operation is located on the farm just next to the production facilities. In a particularly bad year, when prices weren’t to his liking, he entered the retailing end of operations. He later expanded into other farm products. Beginning with a small roadside stand, the retail venture now includes three supermarkets in Cum berland County. 1 We Are Offering an Open Meeting to Area Farmers. Cattle slaughter at 58,200 bead was down 14 percent while calf slaughter at 14,400 head was down 27 percent from last year. Hog slaughter at 284,000 head decreased two percent from a year ago. The number of sheep and lambs slaughtered totaled 10,200, down 26 percent from May 1979.
