The top selling Suffolk ram, boasting a height of 35 inches, a loin eye area of 4.59 square inches and final weight of 354 pounds, brought $1450 for owner Paul H. Leader of York. The ram, Leader G 1054, sold to Linda Adler of Bloomsburg, Columbia County. A total of 37 yearling rams crossed the auction block, averaging $362.57 for a grand total of $13,415. Five Dorset rams averaged $372; 16 Suffolk rams averaged $538; three Corriedale rams averaged $126; six Hampshire rams averaged $253; six Shrop shire rams averaged $154; and one Southdown ram brought $llO. C & J Farms of Columbia Crossroads, Bradford County, was the buyer. Charles McCrae of Mohnton, Berks County, sold the top Cornedale jam, C.R.M. 94. The ram "which weighed 248 pounds ana had a 4.75 square inch loin eye, went to Donald VanVhet of Wellsboro, Tioga County, for $l7O. The high Hampshire ram, recording a 1.04 pound average daily gam, was owned by Shober Farm of Berlin, Somerset County. The ram sold to C & J Farms for $3OO. Kelly McConnell of Fredenckstown, Washing ton County, was the suc cessful bidder on the top selling Shropshire yearling ram. The ram, which had a final weight of 244 pounds and a loin eye area of 3.89 square mches, was owned by Warn G. Manhennett of Cochranville, Chester County. The ram sold for $230. C & J Farms, the top buyer of the sale with 10 rams, was again the successful bidder on the Southdown yearling ram. The ram, which sold for $llO, had a 4.25 square loin eye and was owned by W. L Henning of State College, Centre County. “This was quite a suc cessful sale,” said a PDA spokesman. “There were several exceptionally tall rams which also carried length and good con firmation throughout. These are excellent indications that Pennsylvania sheep producers are striving for a complete package, rather than show ring fads. ’ ’ There will be a Per formance Tested Ram Lamb Sale, September 6 at the Department’s Meat Animal Evaluation Center in State College, Centre County.
