ALLENTOWN - More
than 600 friends, colleagues,
and well-wishers from
across the Lehigh Valley and
across the state gathered
Sunday to pay tribute to S.
Glenn EUenberger who will
retire July 15 after serving
29 years as Lehigh County
agricultural agent.
EUenberger has long
established himself as a
partner in the agricultural
community, but his efforts in
bridging the gap between
rural and urban people has
gamed him enormous
popularity in many sectors
of the community.
The feeling of warmth and
friendship was mutual.
“I wish I could tell you by
getting into a B-17 and
writing I love you in the
sky,” EUenberger said. (He
was a captain in the Army
feir Corps during World War
II.)
EUenberger ,s only the
second agent to serve in the
county succeeding the late
A 1 Hacker who held the post
from 1916 to 1951. Prior to
taking the Lehigh position,
EUenberger was an
assistant agent in Somerset
County for five years.
Lee Bull, former Penn
sylvania Secretary of
' Agriculture, praised

Ellenberger for his “out
standing work” especially in
the farm-city week and open
gate programs which con
sistently bring large crowds
of city dwellers to' county
farms.
Bull also noted that
Ellenberger’s cooperation
with the news media has
promoted the agricultural
viewpoint far beyond the
farming community.
Ellenberger has appeared on
many television and radio
programs and writes weekly
columns in Allentown
Morning Call and Sunday
Call-Chronicle newspapers.
Thomas King, associate
director of the cooperative
extension service, describes
Ellenberger as “unique”
and “one of the good strong
agents in the state.”
“He never backed down
from a problem or issue. We
have a deep appreciation for
his efforts and ac
complishments.
“Few academicians could
draw this large number of
people to a retirement
salute,” King added.
Also making remarks
were David K. Bausch,
Lehigh County Executive;
Marion Deppen of the
national extension frater
nity; Paul Reber, Mon
tgomery County agent and
