G32—Lancaster Fanning, Saturday, May 31,1980 D-Day (Continued from Page C3l) space, the school does all of its cattle breeding ar tificially, and they buy their feed. Other farm animals that the students work with and learn from include 9 registered Polled Hereford beef cattle. The city pastures lure dotted with 15 registered Suffolk ewes and 20 market lambs, too. And, the 23 feeder pigs purchased by the students for their FFA projects find themselves far from the Lancaster Stockyard, nestled into a comfortable mud bole at a nearby hog shed. As teacher-advisor Ed Hall explained, each of the students at Saul High School is an FFA member. Those students who want to raise a feeder pig for a project buy a pig on their tnp to Lan caster, and then keep it at the school. “The kids pay for everything, and they have to take care of the pig, weighing it every week. After the winter market hog sale, the feed bill is divided by 23. What each student owes is taken out of their sale check. If a student winds up losing money on the project, the gives them $S that way nobody loses,” Hall said. Ed Hall’s enthusiasm for the school seems to be contagious among his students, and fellow teachers. Hail is one of two teachers who graduated from Saul High School and returned. His counterpart, Steve Peak, is the instructor of laboratory animal production. There are 16 vocational agriculture teachers in all. Hall explained that the school is open to any resident of Philadelphia, but it’s hard to get in. He pointed out each year the school holds two days of interviews, talking to roughly 400 applicants.
