learn sheep
management skills
UNIVERSITY PARK -
Twenty-two vo-ag students
of Franklin County par
ticipated in a sheep clinic
sponspored by the Franklin
County FFA in cooperation
with the Pennsylvania
Extension Service and the
Department of Agricultural
Educational at Penn State
recently at the farm of Bruce
B. Gamble, Concord.
The sheep clinic was
•conducted as part of a
statewide effort to expand
sheep- produced in Penn
sylvania. Basic technical
sheep management skills
were taught by David Kehr,
vocational agriculture
teacher at the Waynesboro
Area Senior High School.
The skills taught included
catching sheep, making an
instant halter, telling the age
of sheep by their teeth,
dewormmg using a dose
syringe, giving an in
tramuscular injection, and
determining temperature
with a rectal thermometer
These sheep management
skills were taught to enable
shepherds to become
competent in performing
sheep management prac

industry. Herb Jordon,
extension poultry professor,
is serving as conference
chairman.
Key speakers will
highlight the conference.
The following topics will be
covered: preventative
medicine in the rabbitry
from a veterinarian's view
by John Harkness, assistant
professor of veterinary
science at PSU; the New
Zealand, strong points and
limitations by Charles
Huber, East Aurora, New
York; handling the
laboratory rabbit and
physical anesthesia by
Louis Barnette, Bristol-
Myers Products, New
Jersey; rabbit—useful to a
scientist by William Patton,
assistant professor of
veterinary science, PSU;
environmental systems may
affect cost of producing
rabbits by Herbert C. Jor

laboratory session allowing
each participant to practice
the technical skills. Under
the direction of David Kehr,
all participants had the
opportunity to become
competent in performing
each skill.
Thirteen participants
received the certificate of
accomplishment. To qualify,
individuals had to meet
standard criteria by per
forming their newly learned
skills before an evaluator
from Penn State . Those
receiving the certificates of
accomplishment were:

60 - GRADE HOLSTEIN COWS - 60
This herd consists of 60 Holstein cows of which some
are first calf heifers and many second calf heifers.
About 20 of the cows are recently fresh, 20 dry cows or
drying off cows due for summer production and many
cows are milking and rebred for fall. The cows are
large in size and have had the benefit of being sired by
some of the better Purebred bulls in Kent and Queen
Anne Counties; also selling a good service sire.
