Pit—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, May 17,19 M Carol BERWICK - Carol Slusser Fraind, a resident of Berwick who specializes in paintings of farms and farmers will hold her third one woman exhibit May 18- June 16 at Bloomsburg State College, Kehr Union Building. The exhibit will be open between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. May 18-27 and from 8 a.m.-ll p.m. daily thereafter. A native of the Berwick area and a graduate of Bloomsburg State College, Fraind has taught science for the past 12 years in the Berwick School District and is currently working on certification in art from Kutztown State College. She recently won first prize in the Hazelton juried fine arts festival held earlier this month. This show will be a collection of approximately 35 paintings centering upon rural and agricultural people and themes. Watercolor and acrylics are her favorite media, but she also utilizes other media to achieve certain affects. Fraind states her purpose in painting is far more im portant than any of the awards she has won. Her artistic undertakings reflect her “rural background and perhaps these paintings will make people more aware of the forces that are eliminating family farms and open spaces. Un fortunately, certain groups in our society look at rolling fields and quiet forests only in terms of how they can be exploited to make big profits. In the few years that I’ve been painting, I have noticed how each farm is unique different in some way from every other farm.” She continues, “No (Hie will every stop progress and its relentless encroachment, hot perhaps communities will learn to guide these changes toward more in telligent and aesthetic results. Allowing people to see the uncommon splendor in die commonplace is the first step toward having them appreciate and try to preserve the things that really count” One of her worts will be included in a calendar printed by the McCleery- Cummings firm this year.
