Animal and Plant Health
Inspection Service, said
state and federal
veterinarians have almost
completed eradication ac
tivities that began early in
April, when exotic
Newcastle disease was
diagnosed in a young yellow
naped Amazon parrot that
had died m a Camp Hill, Pa.,
residence shortly after
purchase from the com
mercial aviary of Kevm
Smith in Alexandria, Va.
Investigations by federal
and state veterinarians
showed many birds exposed
to the diseases, as well as

of actively pursuing over
seas markets ”
In 1974 the New Freedom
firm exported 1.27 percent of
their gross sales. In just five
years they raised their
exports to 10.23 percent of
their gross sales. Exports for
the firm have grown from
$120,613 in 1974 to $1,059,428
in 1979.
Company representatives
said they believe their
success is due m large part
to personal contacts made in
export countries. Visits to
additional infection at the
Smith aviary.
Rissler said the federal
quarantine is being lifted
from the Smith aviary as it
has now been 15 days since
all birds m the aviary were
destroyed and the premises
thoroughly cleaned and
disinfected. It is now con
sidered safe for the facility
to resume operation without
danger from the original
disease outbreak, he said.
