C4—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, May 10,1980 homestead c t/oies Continued from Page C 2 ready for that. Many farmers are conservative in their thoughts and everyone was for her. Only one family I lived with was pro-Labor,” she stated. “There’s so much history,” Annette said in ap preciation. “They’re so old and we’re so young. We saw Roman tiles while we were there.” She said the people of the United Kingdom are very grateful to the United States for the part they played in World War n. “Their hospitality was very good. ” Annette said she has wanted to be an IF YE “for a pretty long tune, but 1 was afraid I might get homesick. I was lucky. I wanted to go to Scotland or Switzerland when I applied. Listening to IFYE’s who had gone encouraged me. I got to know a lot and we traveled with Australians and New Zealanders so we learned about their countries too.” She has already had a visit from some English fnends and she is hopeful that more of her families will visit her family in Bucks County. Her family has opened their homes to IFYE’s, so they are not new to international experiences. Annette said her whole family now has an mcreased awareness of events in the Umted Kingdom. She added, “I think some of my families will come. It is a realistic vacation for people from England.” Annette became adept at adjusting European cooking measurements from weighing to measuring, and she has included some samples of English foods for some of the lucky groups to which she has shown her slides. Below are included two recipes she brought home with her. Annette is now working as a Licensed Practical Nurse in Doylestown and helps on her family’s farm, but her life will never be quite the same. Her experiences as an IF YE mean a lot and she showed the depth of her feeling for her hosts when she said, “I know they would welcome me back anytime as a daughter.” 8 ounces oats 8 ounces margarine or butter 4 ounces brown sugar 2 Tablespoons dark Karo Mu margarine or butter, sugar and Karo, heat in a pan until melted.
