pared to last week, slaughter
steers and heifers dosed 1.50
to 2.00 lower. Cows sold
mostly 3.00 lower, while
bulls finished 1.00 to 2.00
lower. Trade opened the
week slow in response to a
lower carcass beef trade,
coupled with one area
packer out on strike.
Tuesday and Wednesday
found increase buyer
demand and prices held
steady with Mondays early
rounds.

Lbs of feed equal in value to 1 doz. eggs, 1 lb. of milk,
broilers and turkey, and bushels of corn equal in value to
100 pounds of hogs.
Milk production during February totaled 684 million
pounds, up 13 percent from a year earlier. The number
of milk cows m the Commonwealth during February
was 713,000 head, up 10,000 head from a year ago. Milk
production per cow averaged 960 pounds in February,
up 100 pounds from a year ago.
February egg production tolled 347 million, 21
percent above a year ago. The February average of
16.6 million layers was up 11 percent. Egg production
per 100 layers was 2,092, compared with 1,926 in
February, 1979.
Commercial red meat production during February
totaled 77.5 million pounds, up 9 percent from
February 1979. Kill days for February included 21
weekdays and 4 Saturdays, compared with 20 week
days (one a holiday) and 4 Saturdays for February
1979. Cattle slaughter at 52,300 head was up one percent
while calf slaughter at 21,100 head was 5 per cent more
than in February a year ago. Hog slaughter totaled
270,700 head, 16 percent greater than last year. The
number of sheep and lambs slaughtered totaled 11,500
head, up 29 percent from February 1979.
