Pease was selected as the best dairy showman and fitter at this year’s show, defeating 114 other students on his climb to the top. His first championship came in the K[olstein class, where Lloyd and his bovine partner strolled their way to a purple ribbon. Later in the afternoon, Pease walked into the show nng again. This time he was competing against the best showmen in all breeds— Ayrshire, Guernsey, Jersey, and Brown Swiss—in both the professional and amateur divisions. He walked away with the professional showman championship, stepping up one more rung on the suc cess ladder. The crowd cheered their approval when the loud speaker announced Pease as the winning Penn State student. Pease got his toughest competition from Lori Sollenberger, from Everett, Bedford County. Lon took second in the overall contest with her Brown Swiss partner. Sollenberger was the champion fitter in the Brown Swiss competition, and went on to be selected as the champion fitter in the professional division. For winners and losers alike, it was a long day for most of the students. They were up with the chickens putting the last minute touches on their entries in their effort to be the best. The cows and the students found the tune between classes to be a test of patience. A number of the contestants walked away with sunburns, along with their ribbons. But, there was fun along with the air of competition in the show ring. A milk chugging contest left several teams with the distinct smell of curdled milk on their shirts, and a quart of the Creameries best in their stomachs. Six teams competed m the calf dressing contest. Spectators got a real show while two students tackled the fme art of ‘fitting’ a dairy calf into an elaborate costume. The winner, Super Swiss, in her cape and leotards, was given a run for the money from a provacative Jersey heifer, Bovine Derek sporting braids and an ankle bracelet. The winning fraternity team was from Delta Theta Sigma. In a time of 47% seconds, Dan Greggs, Monte DeFrancis, Ron Hoffman, and Brian Campbell downed four quarts of milk each and raced for the finish line with their empty cartons. This marks the third straight year the team from DTS chugged the fastest. Of the independent chuggers, the lour man team known as Bruct s RouaU took home the blue ribbon for the fourth year in a row.
