A3t—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, May 10,1980 LANCASTER - Noting that dairy goats are not looked on at the same level as dairy cows, Robert Morris, state coordinator for the Dairy Princess Pageant, responded in his letter to the Lancaster County Dairy Princess committee that he did not feel the new ruling disqualifying dairy goats as a contestant’s two dairy animals was discriminatory. Barb Stauffer, local committee chairman read the response to an inquiry sent to the state committee by the Lancaster committee. The local group had stated that they were quite sur prised by the ruling and felt that it could be discriminatory and was unfounded. While it was clear by the nods and aside comments of those present that the committee overwhelmingly favors a representative from the dairy cow industry, perhaps Glenn Shirk, county agent summed up the feelings best. Shirk said, “I think that the committee could specify who is qualified rather than telling who does not qualify.” In Mt. rancher gets beef award THREE FORKS, Mt. - Jess Kilgore, manager of Kilgore Cattle Co., a family owned cattle ranch located near Three Forks, Mt., on the bead waters of the Missouri River, has earned the prestigious “Com mercial Producer of the Year” Award fur 1980, named annually by the Beef Improvement Federation. Kilgore, one of the earliest lifetime members of the Amenan Simmental Association, is recognized as a pioneer in the use and importance of performance testing concepts in beef cattle production. Since purchasing his own ranch in 1957, Kilgore weaning weights have increased by more than 160 pounds, the direct result of performance testing and careful selection. He served six years on the ASA Board of Trustees, was a member of the Executive Committee and Treasurer for two years. He also chaired ASA’s Performance Committee for five years. He becomes the third American Simmental Association nominee to gain the nationally-acclaimed honor. Ron Baker of C & B Livestock of Hermiston, Ore., won in 1976, and the Garst Company of Coon Rapids, la., took the award in 1977. A native of Missouri, Kilgore moved to Montana in 1938. He married Eloisa Williams in 1940 and shortly thereafter became ranch manager of an operation that consisted of 9,000 head at its peak. He’s the father of two married daughters, both of whom work daily on the ranch now known as “Kilcatco.” Lancaster Dairy Princess Committee to uphold new rule their letter to Morris, ‘ the Lancaster group questioned the possible complication of using federal funds. Morris, however, responded that no federal money is used for the con test, and that the majority of dairy cow people want a dairy cow representative for their product. Barb Stauffer said that while she would prefer not to have a dairy goat girl represent them in the role of dairy princess, she felt that so little chance existed of that happening that the ruling should just be drop ped. On the issue of a dairy goat girl not having the background to properly respond to the public, Lucinda Landis, this year’s reigning dairy princess remarked that even she I IW* SPECIAL DAIRY SALE 1 Jssr HERD DISPERSAL | | At Shady Lane Dairy Sales, V* mile west of Quarryville, PA off Oak I I Bottom Rd. ; x 50 HEAD REGISTERED & HIGH GRADE HOLSTEINS i I FROM LYCOMING CO. !
