Dl4—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, May 10,1980 Ephrata wins ag mechanization contest EPHRATA Ephrata High School swept the top honors in the Lancaster County FFA Agricultural Mechanization Contest on Friday, May 2. In the competition held at Ephrata High School par ticipants from the host school won both the team and top individual honors. Marvin Horst placed first in the individual placings, followed by Stanley Homing. In addition to Horst, the Ephrata team included Avery Copenhaver and Tim High. A total of 22 students from five schools competed in the test of mechanization skills. Among eight skill areas in the competition were determining the elevation of a specified area from a contour map, wiring a motor to operate on 115-volt current with thermal protection, using a hand tapemeasure and level to determine the slope between two stakes and measuring piston head size with a micrometer. Also, cutting -and threading a pipe to install a fitting, layout of a rafter, performing general main tenance on a tractor and identifying tractor engine parts.
